British FM says US Britain's most important ally
Britain's new Foreign Secretary William Hague said Friday that the United States is "without doubt" Britain's most important ally, calling the relationship "an unbreakable alliance."
"The United States is without doubt the most important ally of the United Kingdom," Hague said in a press conference with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The relationship is "rooted in the strong alignment" of their national interests and the "scope of our cooperation is unparalleled," he said, citing military, diplomatic and intelligence branches working "hand in glove."
Hague, who is on his inaugural overseas trip in his new role just three days into Britain's coalition government, added: "It's not a backward-looking or nostalgic relationship, it is one looking to the future."
The two countries work together "combatting violent extremism, to addressing poverty and conflict around the world," he said, adding London and Washington "share common priorities to an extraordinary degree.
"We will continue to pursue these priorities in what I think we can confidently say is an unbreakable alliance," Hague said.
