British Airways opts for Rolls-Royce engines for A380
British Airways opted Thursday for Rolls-Royce engines for the Airbus A380 superjumbos it has on order, only weeks after one of its Trent 900 models failed disastrously on a Qantas flight.
Rolls-Royce said the deal, confirming an initial accord in 2007, covers Trent 900 and Trent 1000 engines for the carriers A380s and Boeing 787 'Dreamliner' planes.
The contract would be worth more than five billion dollars (3.8 billion euros) at list prices.
Analysts said the deal represents a major vote of confidence in Rolls-Royce which came under intense pressure after a Qantas A380 was forced to make an emergency landing in Singapore with 466 people on board in early November.
British Airways has 19 A380s on order, including seven options, plus 42 787s, which includes 18 options.
