Britain's Newcastle International Airport was closed Thursday after a passenger jet slid off the runway, but there were no reported injuries, the local fire service said.

The Thomson Fly Boeing 737-800 jet carrying 188 passengers from Arrecife in the Canary Islands "had gone very slightly off the runway," according to Tyne and Wear fire service group manager Keith Carruthers.

All passengers and crew disembarked safely shortly after the incident, which happened at 9:00 pm (2100 GMT).

The airport will remain closed until the aircraft has been moved.

Up to six inches of snow has fallen on the city of Newcastle, northeast England, over the last 24 hours as Britain experiences its earliest widespread snowfall for 17 years.
