Conservative leader David Cameron arrived at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday to ask Queen Elizabeth II for permission to form a government and become the new British prime minister.

Cameron and his wife Samantha stepped from their limousine and entered the palace 40 minutes after outgoing premier Gordon Brown had told the queen he was resigning to make way for a power-sharing government led by Cameron.
