Britain vows to back action against Iran over US plot
Britain said it would support "measures to hold Iran accountable for its actions" after the United States said it had foiled an Iran plot to assassinate the Saudi envoy to Washington.
A spokesman for Prime Minister David Cameron described the alleged Iranian involvement in the plot as "shocking".
"We congratulate the US authorities on the successful operation to disrupt a conspiracy to attack diplomats in the United States," the spokesman said.
"Indications that this plot was directed by elements of the Iranian regime are shocking. Directing an attack against another country is a flagrant violation of international law which calls for the strongest condemnation.
"The United Kingdom is in close touch with the US authorities on this case. We will support measures to hold Iran accountable for its actions."
The US Justice Department on Tuesday charged two men with conspiring with Iranian government factions to blow up Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir on US soil.
A criminal complaint named Manssor Arbabsiar, 56, a naturalised US citizen holding Iranian and US passports, and Gholam Shakuri, an Iran-based member of the Quds Force, a unit of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
