Britain summons Syrian envoy, warns of further measures

Britain summoned the Syrian ambassador Friday in coordination with other European nations, warning of "further measures" if it fails to stop a crackdown on protesters, the foreign ministry said.

Foreign Office political director Geoffrey Adams called in Syrian envoy Sami Khiyami "to express the UK's strong concerns about the ongoing situation in Syria," the ministry said in a statement.

Adams urged Syria to "stop the killing of innocent protestors immediately, and to release all political prisoners", it said.

A Foreign Office spokesman told AFP it was "part of a coordinated EU move" but did not say how many other countries were involved. Five EU nations summoned the Syrian ambassadors to their countries in April.
