Britain stressed Thursday it recognised only statements made by Alassane Ouattara as president of Ivory Coast after defiant strongman Laurent Gbagbo ordered the expulsion of the British ambassador.

"The British government has recognised Mr Alassane Ouattara as the democratically elected president of Cote d'Ivoire," said a spokeswoman for the Foreign Office in London.

"It recognises the legitimacy of statements made by or on behalf of his government.

"The British government does not accept the validity of statements made by others."
