British Finance Minister George Osborne held telephone talks with IMF chief Christine Lagarde on Saturday to discuss the international financial instability, a Treasury spokesman told AFP.

"I can confirm that the chancellor spoke with Christine Lagarde a couple of minutes ago by phone," he said, adding that they were both in the United States, where Osborne is on holiday.

"They were both talking about the international economic situation, monitoring it and also discussing the importance of countries taking decisions to build confidence."

They also discussed "wider international instability", he said.

Former French finance minister Lagarde took over as the managing director of the Washington-based International Monetary Fund on July 5 after compatriot Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned.
