British police found a body Wednesday believed to be that of a gunman who killed a number of people in a popular tourist area of northwest England, they said.

"Police... have located a body believed to be that of Derrick Bird in a wooded area near Boot," Cumbria Constabulary said, referring to the man they had been seeking over a number of shootings in the Lake District.

"Police have seized a gun from the scene and are now working to formally confirm the identity of the deceased and the number of people injured or dead," added a police statement.

Local radio said at least four people had been killed, while the BBC reported that there had been 11 separate shooting incidents since the first killing was reported in the coastal town of Whitehaven.
