British energy giant BP on Monday raised the cost of its response to the disastrous Gulf of Mexico oil spill to 3.95 billion dollars (3.05 billion euros).

The total includes the bill for containing and cleaning spilt crude, relief well drilling, grants to Gulf states and money paid to the US federal government, it said in a statement.

The figure includes 67,500 compensation payouts totalling 207 million dollars following the spill, caused when BP's Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in April, killing 11 workers.
