BHP Billiton half-year profit soars 72% to US$10.5 bln

The world's biggest miner BHP Billiton Wednesday said half-year profits surged 72 percent to US$10.52 billion on rising commodities prices, and unveiled a US$10.0 billion share buyback.

"An improving economic backdrop and broader supply constraints continued to support the fundamentals for the majority of BHP Billiton's core commodities," the Anglo-Australian company said in a statement.
