BBC freezes licence fee for at least a year
The BBC said Thursday it would freeze for at least a year the licence fee which every household in Britain with a television or radio must pay to finance the broadcaster.
The BBC Trust, the corporation's governing body, went further, proposing keeping the cost at its present level of 145.50 pounds (174 euros, 228 dollars) for a further 12 months, until March 2013.
The Trust said it had made its decision in response to the "exceptional pressures" of the economic climate.
But by volunteering a freeze, the BBC has avoided a clash with Prime Minister David Cameron's coalition government.
Cameron's Conservatives had warned the BBC could not escape the austerity drive it is pursuing in a bid to slash the country's record deficit.
