Austrian police arrested a British man trying to smuggle six Afghan illegal immigrants from Italy to France, including one hidden in the boot of his car, police said on Sunday.

The 34 year old was arrested overnight Saturday in Austria's western Tyrol region driving a car with British number plates. The Afghans, aged 25 to 40, were also arrested.

"They will be handed over to the Italian police," an Austrian police official told the APA news agency.

The Briton reportedly initially told police that the Afghans were friends of a friend and that he was doing them a favour by giving them a lift to France.

Police are investigating whether the man is part of a broader people smuggling network.
