A Cape Town court on Friday denied bail to an Australian man who is charged with attempted murder over allegations that he tried to torch a South African woman's home, media said.

Shumsheer Singh Ghumman, 32, was arrested two weeks ago in Cape Town after he allegedly tried to petrol-bomb Hannah Rhind's family's home in the upmarket suburb of Clifton, Western Cape police said.

"His bail application was turned down and he will appear again in court again on February 8," said police spokesman Ricardo Davids.

According to the police, Ghumman and Rhind met in Britain in 2009 and became friends, before she accused him of stalking her.

Ghumman was later convicted of harassment in a British court.

He is also facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, malicious damage to property and attempted arson.
