At least five people were killed when a gunman went on the rampage in a popular tourist region of northwest England on Wednesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron said.

"At least five people have died," he told the House of Commons, commenting on the shootings at the start of his first weekly grilling in the lower house of parliament.

"The government will do everything it possibly can to help the local community and those affected," he added, saying that lawmakers were "alarmed and shocked" by the shootings in the Lake District.
