Afghan and NATO forces did "everything in their power to rescue" a kidnapped British aid worker who died during an attempt to free her from her captors, the top US general in Afghanistan said Saturday.

General David Petraeus, who commands US and NATO troops fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, offered his condolences to family, friends and colleagues of Linda Norgrove, who was killed late Friday.

"Afghan and coalition security forces did everything in their power to rescue Linda," said Petraeus in a statement released by NATO's International Security Assistance Force.

"Linda was a courageous person with a passion to improve the lives of Afghan people, and sadly she lost her life in their service. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time," he said.
