Actress Googie Withers dies in Australia
British actress Googie Withers, best known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock's 1938 film "The Lady Vanishes" has died in Sydney aged 94, reports said Sunday.
Withers, who was married to Australian actor John McCallum until his death last year, emigrated in the 1950s and continued to work in film.
"She was an extraordinary person, and John and Googie together were probably the last of a breed of actor-manager and wife team to tour the world and work constantly," friend and theatre producer John Frost told public broadcaster ABC.
"I think it's the end of a golden era with the two of them passing now, and in particular Googie."
Born Georgette Lizette Withers, Googie was raised in Britain where she began acting at a young age.
But she was adopted by Australia, which appointed her an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1980 for her work in building the country's film, theatre and television industries.
