Twenty-seven pupils at a school in northern England were rushed to hospital Wednesday after feeling sick and collapsing, local police said.

The incident occurred at Outwood Academy School, in the market town of Ripon, North Yorkshire Police said.

"Approximately 27 students have been affected who have displayed signs of sickness and feeling faint," it said in a statement.

"Some have been attended to by paramedics at the scene and others have been taken to hospital."

Police and fire crews are investigating, they said.

Outwood, located near the picturesque Yorkshire Dales national park, is one of the biggest schools in England, with some 2,200 students aged between 11 and 18.
