Another person has died in Germany from infection with a mysterious killer bacteria, officials said Thursday, bringing the European death toll to 18 as authorities hunt its origin.

The lethal strain of E. coli claimed the life of an elderly woman overnight in the northern port city of Hamburg, the epicentre of the outbreak, a spokesman for the municipal health office told AFP.

German authorities have failed to pinpoint the source of the outbreak, which has sickened more than 2,000 people in the last month, but have warned consumers against eating raw vegetables.
