Ukraine to mull benefits from Russia's customs union: PM
Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said Wednesday he had tasked his government with taking a closer look at the possible benefits of Kiev joining a Russia-led customs union.
"I have given an order to the economics ministry to look at the technical regulations from the point of view of us possibly joining them," Azarov said at a regional summit in Russia's second city of Saint Petersburg.
"We believe that it will at the very least simplify trade between our countries."
Azarov spoke after Brussels refused to meet with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych this week over the jailing of his opponent and former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
A few hours after the Brussels' rebuff on Tuesday, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced that a loose grouping of ex-Soviet states that includes Ukraine had agreed to set up a free trade zone.
