Police shot dead two suspected rebels Saturday on a highway in Russia's troubled Caucasus region of Ingushetia which borders Chechnya, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The rebels opened fire when police tried to stop their car for a security check in the Nazran region, a spokesman for the local security forces told Novosti.

They were killed in return fire, he said, adding that the men were suspected of having staged attacks on the police and killing civilians.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin this month announced a major economic drive to make the impoverished region more attractive to investors in a bid to end insurgency in the troubled Caucasus.
