Two Russian policemen were killed Thursday in an attack in Russia's restless southern region of Kabardino-Balkaria, Interfax reported, citing local security officials.

The police said the incident occurred on the outskirts of the North Caucasus republic's capital Nalchik, which last week was the site of another attack that killed the region's top Muslim cleric, Anas Pshikhachev.

"Two district police inspectors were killed in the attack and their service weapons were stolen," Interfax quoted a local Russian investigator as saying.

Kabardino-Balkaria is located near the volatile regions of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, where the authorities are battling a Muslim insurgency and attacks on government officials are a near-daily occurrence.
