The assailant fled the scene while the police officer died of his wounds, the statement said.
A traffic policemen wounded in a different incident the day before died in hospital, police said Sunday.
He was shot at by a gunman while on duty in the city. "He had two abdominal wounds and died in hospital," a source in Dagestan region police told RIA-Novosti.
Khasavyurt is a city in the mountains about 70 kilometers (45 miles) away from the capital Makhachkala.
Attacks on governments officials and police are nearly an every-day occurrence in the nearby regions of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya, a Caucasus province where Russia fought two wars against separatists in the 1990s.
