Two policemen killed in Caucaus republic: ministry
Gunmen shot dead two policemen in the troubled North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria on Monday, the republic's interior ministry said.
The policemen were attacked by three men in the capital Naltchik, according to reports from the Interfax news agency, citing the ministry.
Following two wars fought by the Kremlin against separatists in Chechnya over the past 20 years, violence against government officials and servicemen in the Caspian Sea region has become a near-daily occurrence.
Shooting and bombings are regularly blamed on local criminals and Islamists with links to Chechnya.
Fuelled by endemic poverty and corruption, the militants are seeking to establish an independent Islamic state across the North Caucasus.
