Two policemen, 5 rebels killed in Russian Caucasus
Two policemen and five suspected rebels died Tuesday during a search operation in the restive northern Russian Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, a local investigating committee said.
"The fighting began after the launch of a search operation," in the afternoon in the Elbrus district, the committee said, according to the Itar-Tass news agency, adding that a policeman had been injured.
"According to preliminary information five rebels were killed," a member of the committee cited by Ria Novosti said, adding that the operation had been "temporarily suspended."
Four presumed rebels were killed in the republic at the start of the month in a similar security operation.
Swathes of the Caucasus are wracked by unrest. The Kremlin fought two wars against separatist rebels in Chechnya in the 1990s, and the violence has since spread into the nearby regions of Dagestan and Ingushetia.
