Two policemen were killed Thursday in the Russian Caucasus region of Dagestan bordering Chechnya, Interfax news agency reported quoting a local police official.

Armed men opened fire on the police who had stopped their vehicle for an identity check in the village of Karamkhi, the official said.

Dagestan, in the volatile North Caucasus region in southern Russia, has been the site of regular attacks against security services.

The local pro-Kremlin authorities in Dagestan, Ingushetia and other North Caucasus regions are battling to defeat an Islamist insurgency that has already killed scores of civilians and police.
