A Russian Mig-31 fighter jet crashed in the Perm region of Russia's Urals on Tuesday, killing both its pilots, the defence ministry announced.

"The rescue group arrived on the scene and established that the crew of the fighter jet was killed," defence ministry spokesman Colonel Igor Konashenkov told the official ITAR-TASS news agency.

He said that the plane was not carrying weapons.

Military aircraft crashes are frequent in Russia, with accidents often blamed on failures of out-dated Soviet-era equipment.
