One traffic policeman was killed and another wounded Thursday in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan when gunmen shot at their car, a police spokesman said.

"A traffic police patrol was shot at in Makhachkala," a spokesman for regional police told AFP, referring to Dagestan's main city. "As a result, one is dead and one is wounded."

A second gunfight broke out after the police managed to track down the attackers in the ensuing security sweep, said the spokesman.

The law enforcement officials were working at the scene and had not yet confirmed the number of attackers and whether they were wounded or killed, the spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

Russia is fighting a Muslim insurgency in the Caucasus and deadly attacks on government and police officials in Dagestan as well as neighbouring Chechnya and Ingushetia are an almost daily occurrence.
