Top prison official killed in new Dagestan unrest
Gunmen on Friday shot dead the deputy prisons chief for Dagestan, his daughter, nephew and driver in the latest atrocity in the unrest-plagued Russian Caucasus region, officials said.
The gunmen opened fire on a car carrying Dagestan deputy prisons chief Magomed Murtuzaliyev and the other victims in the village of Semender, the local investigative committee said in a statement to Russian news agencies.
"As a result the car caught fire. Murtuzaliyev, his daughter, nephew and driver were all killed," it said, according to the ITAR-TASS news agency.
Dagestan has seen an upsurge in recent days in the unrest which has torn the Caspian Sea region in the last years and officials blame on Islamist insurgents seeking to oust the pro-Kremlin authorities.
On Thursday twin attacks, including a massive car bombing caused by 35 kilogrammes of TNT equivalent, killed one policeman and wounded at least 60 others in the centre of Makhachkala, Dagestan's main city.
