Three police killed in Russian Caucasus attack: official
Unidentified gunmen killed three policemen in a street shooting on Tuesday in Russia's volatile Dagestan region, Russian investigators said.
"Unidentified people shot at the head of the Izberbash police anti-extremism department and four policemen near him," the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement.
The shooting was near a cafe in Izberbash, a town on the Caspian coast near capital Makhachkala.
Three policemen died and two people were hospitalized, the statement said. A criminal probe was launched.
An increasingly deadly Islamist-driven insurgency in the North Caucasus regions of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia has claimed scores of lives annually, with attacks occurring on near daily basis in Dagestan.
