Three Russian cash collectors were shot dead early Sunday when unidentified gunmen attacked their car in Moscow, the investigative committee of prosecutors said.

A total of 10 shots were fired inside the vehicle belonging to a Russian bank, killing all three on the spot, the committee said in a statement posted on its website.

"It appears that all the shots were fired inside the vehicle," it said.

The head of Moscow investigators Anatoly Bagmet said that the three were not professional cash collectors but members of a private security firm employed by the bank.

"Professionals would not have allowed outsiders to enter their car and would never have opened the doors," he said.

He said that sacks of money had been found in the car and it was not clear whether the attackers had managed to steal some of the cash. They money was now being counted, Bagmet said.
