The Russian and US planes presumed to be carrying the 14 spies from either side in the biggest espionage swap since the Cold War took off from Vienna on Friday, an AFP photographer said.

The Russian jet, presumed to be carrying 10 Russian spies expelled by the United States, took off first at around 12:30 pm (1030 GMT) from Vienna airport, where it had arrived about an hour earlier.

The US jet carrying four US spies took off shortly afterwards, an AFP photographer said.
