South Ossetia mourns its lost citizens. Wreaths have been laid at a memorial in the village of Zar to pay homage to those killed on May 20, 1992, when Georgian troops opened fire on a convoy of vehicles carrying refugees, mainly women, children and elderly people, leaving 32 people dead and wounding 16 others. The memorial was unveiled in 2007.
