S. Korea leader to visit Russia, France
The leaders of South Korea and Russia will hold talks next week, President Lee Myung-Bak's office said Monday, likely to touch on a pipeline to pump natural gas from Russia via North Korea.
The meeting between Lee and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will take place in Saint Petersburg on Wednesday, and may involve discussions about the long-mooted project which is estimated to cost $3.4 billion.
In August, the North's leader Kim Jong-Il reportedly gave the pipeline his backing at talks with Medvedev, but analysts remain sceptical because of political risks.
Resource-poor South Korea is one of the world's biggest importers of natural gas.
The president's office said in a statement that talks on economic co-operation, and bilateral and global issues will also take place.
Lee will then attend a summit of G20 leaders in France, the office added.
