Russia's second-largest airline, Transaero, said Tuesday it had signed a contract to purchase four Boeing 747-8 intercontinental passenger jets.

Transaero said it was the first airline in eastern Europe to acquire the latest version of Boeing's largest wide-body aircraft that is capable of carrying 460 passengers.

"The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental will be a great acquisition for Transaero's growing fleet and the company's spreading route network," Boeing's vice president for sales in the region, Marty Bentrott, was quoted as saying in a statement by the airline in Russian.

The amount of the order was not disclosed.

At the end of October the airline announced the purchase of four of Airbus' giant A380 aircraft, also a first for Russia.
