Russian President Dmitry Medvedev arrived in Algeria Wednesday for a one-day visit which will see him hold talks with a series of top officials focusing on arms and energy.

Medvedev was greeted by his Algerian countepart Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia at the capital's airport, according to an AFP photographer at the scene.

Russia's ties to the North African nation date back to the Soviet era when Moscow was its main supplier of arms.

The two countries are also part of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, a loose grouping of major gas-producing countries that some call the gas equivalent of the OPEC oil cartel.
