Russian soldier dumps shell-loaded truck in mud: report
A Russian soldier fled his regiment in Siberia in a truck full of artillery shells and left it unattended after getting stuck in deep mud nearby, police said Tuesday.
"The truck was reported stolen on Tuesday morning," a police spokesman in the eastern Siberian city of Chita told the RIA Novosti news agency.
"After several hours police established that a soldier had left the regiment in the truck. After it became stuck in mud, the soldier walked back and spun a tale about it having been stolen."
LifeNews website quoted police sources as saying that the soldier had intended to sell fuel from the truck while away from the regiment and made up the story about the truck being stolen to avoid punishment.
The truck was loaded with 40 artillery shells, but none were stolen, police said. The driver had earlier been ordered to take the cargo to a weapons disposal site but strayed from his assignment.
