Russian security officer slain in Dagestan
A lieutenant colonel in Russia's FSB federal security service has been shot dead in an apparent ambush in the main city of the restive North Caucasus region of Dagestan, news reports said Monday.
The official, identified only by his last name Magomedov, died in a hail of gunfire late Sunday on a main thoroughfare in the city of Makhachkala, a regional FSB official told Russian news agencies.
It was the second deadly attack against an FSB officer since September 1, when an official was killed by a car bomb, the news reports said.
The Caspian Sea region experiences almost daily shootings and bombings that officials blame on local criminals and Islamists with links to Chechnya.
The Kremlin fought two wars against separatist rebels in Chechnya in the 1990s, and the violence has since spread into the nearby regions of Dagestan and Ingushetia.
