Russian prison chief 'commits suicide' during search
The head of a regional Russian penal service shot himself in the head and died Tuesday while police searched his office during a corruption probe, an investigative official said.
The prisons chief for the Far Eastern region of Khabarovsk Vladimir Konetsky "shot himself in the head from a state-issued pistol ... during a search of his office at work," Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Interfax.
He said Konetsky had earlier in the day been formally charged with accepting a large bribe whose size or other details were not disclosed.
A Transparency International survey released in December said that one in four Russians had admitted to paying bribes in the past year.
