Russian president visits disputed Kuril Islands: AFP

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev arrived in the Kuril Islands Monday, an AFP correspondent said, defying repeated calls from Japan not to visit the archipelago amid a decades-long territorial disputes.

Medvedev arrived on Kunashir island, one of the four islands known in Russia as the Southern Kurils and in Japan as the Northern Territories.
