Russian police officer jailed for corruption
A Russian police officer was sentenced to three years in prison for taking money in return for promising to suspend a criminal probe, investigators at the prosecutor's office said Monday.
Captain Alexei Kuznetsov, 26, and a 44-year-old accomplice had asked the wife of a suspected crook for 10 million rubles (235,500 euros, 329,000 dollars) promising they would then close his case.
The pair were eventually satisfied with 2.5 million rubles but were arrested when the money was handed over.
Corruption is endemic in Russia but particularly widespread among the police.
While President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered a crackdown, condemnations of police officers remain rare.
