BP chief executive Tony Hayward is to resign and present a successor, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin said Monday before meeting the embattled oil boss, Russian news agencies reported.

"Hayward is leaving his post and will present a successor," Sechin said according to the Interfax and RIA Novosti news agencies.

Hayward was later Monday due in Moscow to meet Sechin, the Russian government's energy supremo, as the oil giant wrestles with the liabilities from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
