A Russian court is trying a navy officer on suspicion of stealing half a kilometre of railway track, investigators said Wednesday.

"Alexei Gusev and his accomplice were short of money and decided to steal the railway track for resale," said investigators in the western city of Kaliningrad

The pair hired five workers who dismantled 575 metres (about 1,900 feet) of Yantarni-Primorsk line of a total weight of 30 tonnes within three days.

The officer of Russia's Baltic fleet and the other men were caught red-handed, said the investigators.
