A natural gas pipeline exploded on Wednesday in the remote and resource-rich Yamalo-Nenets region of northern Russia, killing one person and injuring 12, Interfax news agency reported.

Thirteen people were caught in the blast, and one of them died on the way to hospital, the news agency reported quoting an official from the ministry of emergency situations.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.

The pipeline was operated by Novatek, a large private natural gas producer based in the West Siberian region.

The vast Yamal peninsula holds huge reserves of natural gas, with the Russian ministry of resources forecasting production to reach 180 billion cubic metres (6.3 trillion cubic feet) per year by 2020.
