A Russian officer was killed at a radar station in Azerbaijan which has been proposed by Moscow as an alternative to US missile defence sites in Europe, Azerbaijani media reported on Thursday.

Major Sergey Grachev was killed by a fellow soldier at the Gabala radar station in northern Azerbaijan on Sunday, the reports said.

Azerbaijani officials declined to make any comment.

The Soviet-era monitoring station is leased to Russia by Azerbaijan, and Moscow has suggested that the US could share it instead of establishing new sites for missile defence systems in eastern Europe.
