A Russian air force Mig-31 fighter jet crashed in the Urals Friday, but the pilots ejected to safety and there was no damage on the ground, the defence ministry said.

"The pilots are alive and in good condition. The flight was not carrying weapons," said defense ministry spokesman Vladimir Drik, RIA Novosti reported. The plane crashed 60 kilometers (40 miles) from the airport of the Urals city of Perm.

Accidents involving Russian military aircraft are relatively common. The country is currently embarking on a major programme to modernise its military, not least the air force which is still using a lot of Soviet-era equipment.
