The Moscow Circus has decided to interrupt its Japan tour following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that flattened the country's northeast coast, its deputy director said Wednesday.

"After consulting with our Japanese partners we have decided to interrupt our tour ... which was to last until March 21," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted Alexander Ogurtsov, deputy director for international relations at the Moscow-based Nikulin Circus, as saying.

The company, which needs to bring home 50 performers as well as bears, dogs and horses, has turned to the emergencies ministry and air flagship carrier Aeroflot for help, Ogurtsov was quoted as saying.

"We are in constant touch with the performers. They are not panicking and feeling well," he told the news agency.
