Russian Duma could ratify US arms treaty Friday: speaker
Russia's State Duma lower house could ratify a new nuclear weapons reduction treaty with the United States as early as Friday following the US Senate ratification, its speaker said Thursday.
"If the conditions (in the US Senate resolution) do not affect the basic text of the agreement then we could adopt the treaty tomorrow (Friday)," speaker Boris Gryzlov said, Russian news agencies reported.
He said that the State Duma needed to examine the final text agreed by the US Senate -- which was amended from the initial draft -- and it was still awaiting a copy of the original document to examine.
As well as the State Duma, the treaty requires ratification from the Federation Council upper house.
