Russia unhappy with US Senate nuclear treaty additions

Russia is "absolutely" opposed to additions by the US Senate to a historic nuclear weapons treaty that reject a link between missile defence and strategic arms, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday.

"We are absolutely not in agreement with this. This is an arbitrary interpretation of the principles of international law," he told the Russian lower house of parliament.

The lower house, the State Duma, was expected to vote on the treaty in a first reading later Friday but two more readings will be required next year after Russians deputies objected to the US Senate's additions.
