Russia to spend 200 bn euros on roads: Putin
Russia will invest some 200 billion euros ($285 billion) through to 2020 to build new roads and renovate its highway system, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Monday.
Putin, quoted by Russian news agencies, said the government will set up federal and regional funding bodies to oversee the work.
The federal agencies will build some 18,000 kilometres (11,000 miles) of new roads by 2020, he said, adding that between 2002 and 2010, 25,000 kilometres of highways were constructed.
Russia has some of the most dangerous roads in the world because they are poorly maintained and damaged by its bitter winter weather.
